Primera División
In US-sports termsArgentina's top flight — a league that reshuffles its own format more often than MLB tweaks the playoffs. Currently around 30 clubs playing split seasons, Mexico-style.
What it is
Argentina's top division — home of Boca Juniors, River Plate, Racing and Independiente. The format changes frequently; in its current form roughly 30 clubs play two tournaments a year (Apertura and Clausura), each with a playoff.
How you get in
Avoid the drop — relegation currently runs through the season-long combined table — or come up from Primera Nacional.
What it feeds
Top finishers and tournament winners → Copa Libertadores; the next band → Copa Sudamericana. Bottom clubs drop to Primera Nacional.
Whatever the format is this year, one thing is constant: Boca vs River, the Superclásico — widely called the fiercest rivalry in world sports.
